Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a romantic getaway, this region offers unexpected treasures. Here is a (non-exhaustive) selection of 14 castles to discover around Chinon.
Chinon, the Historic Heart of the Loire Valley
Chinon, this picturesque little town in Indre-et-Loire, is much more than just a tourist destination. It’s the heart of a region exceptionally rich in castles and historic mansions. Perched above the Vienne River, Chinon has been the scene of pivotal moments in French history, notably the meeting of Joan of Arc with the Dauphin in 1429. Chinon has even served as a royal capital twice: once for the Kingdom of England in the 12th century under Henry II Plantagenet (who died in Chinon), and once for the Kingdom of France in the 15th century under Charles VII (the Dauphin).
But Chinon is just the beginning of your exploration. By extending your travels to within a mere 30 kilometers, you’ll discover a veritable open-air museum with more than 14 castles, manor houses, and fortresses. These monuments bear witness to the splendor of the French Renaissance and the rich medieval past of Touraine. And these are just the most prestigious historical sites, because the region is literally teeming with small castles, manor houses, hunting lodges… little known but so exciting to discover.
The Royal Fortress of Chinon: A Must-See
Localisation and access
In the heart of the town of Chinon, the Royal Fortress majestically overlooks the Vienne River. It is the ideal starting point for exploring the region.
History and Anecdotes
The Royal Fortress of Chinon is not a single castle, but a complex of three fortified castles: Fort du Coudray, Château du Milieu, and Fort Saint-Georges. Built from the 11th century onwards, this impressive monument was the residence of several kings of France (as well as the Kingdom of England).
The most famous anecdote is undoubtedly the visit of Joan of Arc in 1429. Legend has it that the young Maid of Orléans identified the Dauphin Charles VII among a crowd of courtiers, thus performing the miracle that sealed the future king’s trust in her. This historic moment transformed the course of the Hundred Years’ War.
To be seen
- The impressive 12th-century ramparts
- The restored royal apartments
- The Sainte-Radegonde Chapel (a cave dwelling, a few hundred meters from the fortress)
- The Carroi Museum (in the lower town) dedicated to medieval life (with its hall of the first Estates General Meeting, in 1428)

Azay-le-Rideau : The Renaissance Jewel
Localisation
Just 23 kilometers northeast of Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau stands majestically on the banks of the Indre.
History and Architecture
Built between 1518 and 1527 by Gilles Berthelot, treasurer to King François Ist, this château represents the pinnacle of the French Renaissance style. A château of (almost) human scale, its timeless elegance makes it one of the most photographed châteaux in the Loire Valley.
A delightful anecdote: in 1518, the château almost never saw the light of day. Francis I is said to have ordered the demolition of the previous medieval fortress because its owner had dared to capture the king during a battle! Fortunately, history was rewritten.
The Château d’Azay-le-Rideau celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2025.
Features and Visits
The château is distinguished by its symmetrical architecture, pepperpot turrets, and refined decoration. The blue-gray slate roofs are reflected in the “mirror,” a body of water at the foot of the château that further accentuates the building’s majesty. For your information, this “mirror,” created by widening a branch of the Indre River, dates only from 1956, after the estate was acquired by the State!
- Tastefully furnished interiors (but unfortunately, no original furniture)
- Remarkably restored gardens and park
- Temporary exhibitions and events organized annually
