Recent scientific studies have shown that just two hours a week spent immersed in nature can reduce, or even eliminate, stress for city dwellers. The Touraine region, and the Chinon area in particular, is therefore the ideal destination for a nature retreat or a forest bath !
Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, a stone’s throw from Anjou and Poitou (and less than 3 hours from Paris), Chinon boasts a particularly rich and varied natural environment. Within 50 km, the area reveals a mosaic of landscapes: deep forests, protected wetlands, river islands, and vast open spaces shaped by the Loire and its tributaries (Cher, Indre, Vienne, etc.). The diversity of the landscapes, local flora, and fauna makes it possible to plan a complete nature getaway, alternating between hiking, observing biodiversity, and moments of tranquility.
Wetlands and aquatic environments
The Taligny marsh (5km from La Pénesais)
Located in La Roche-Clermault, the Taligny marsh is one of the most remarkable natural sites in the Chinon region. Classified as a Regional Nature Reserve, it covers more than 100 hectares, comprising wet meadows, reedbeds, ponds, and ditches.
Since the beginning of this year, the site has been developed with a 4-km educational trail, punctuated with explanatory panels and observation points. A wide variety of species can be observed there: herons, harriers, dragonflies, amphibians, as well as flora specific to wetland environments. This trail is also connected to the “In the Footsteps of Rabelais the Botanist” herbarium interpretation trail, which winds between La Devinière (Rabelais Museum) and Seuilly Abbey.
The experience is particularly immersive in spring, when the vegetation comes back to life, and in autumn, during migratory passages.
